Learning outcomes
- Compare and order common fractions using equivalent forms.
- Connect common fractions, decimal fractions and percentages.
- Solve a percentage-of-a-whole problem in context.
Worked example
Rename fractions before comparing them
To compare 3/5 and 7/10, rename 3/5 as tenths. Multiply the numerator and denominator by 2: 3/5 = 6/10.
Now the denominators match. Because 6/10 is less than 7/10, we know that 3/5 is less than 7/10.
Equivalent fractions name the same amount in different ways.
