Fractions: compare, order and connect

0 of 4 questions answered0%

Learning outcomes

  • Compare and order common fractions using equivalent forms.
  • Connect common fractions, decimal fractions and percentages.
  • Solve a percentage-of-a-whole problem in context.

Worked example

Rename fractions before comparing them

To compare 3/5 and 7/10, rename 3/5 as tenths. Multiply the numerator and denominator by 2: 3/5 = 6/10.

Now the denominators match. Because 6/10 is less than 7/10, we know that 3/5 is less than 7/10.

Equivalent fractions name the same amount in different ways.

1Which fraction is greater: 3/5 or 7/10?
2Which fraction is equivalent to 3/5?
3Which list orders the fractions from smallest to largest?
4A class has 80 exercise books. What is 25% of 80?
